TOBIDEI

"I'm a schoolgirl in love with her Senpai...!"

CHARACTERS:

Tobi.

A masked, mysterious shinobi with the curious ability to displace himself. It appears he can teleport, and carries the mark of no village. Despite his silly personality, Tobi is immensely skilled.

Deidara.

Kouhai turned Senpai, Deidara is a young, rash shinobi from the village of the Hidden Rock. He calls himself an artist, and his explosion jutsu his medium.

THE VIBE
Jesus christ. I've been shipping these two since elementary school. How do I even begin to describe what they mean to me? What they mean to EACH OTHER. Even when we found out who Tobi was, and a mountain more ships opened up for him, I was still emotionally invested in Tobidei. In fact, I would even say that finding out Tobi is not only Obito, but now canonically has 12 years on Deidara(31 and 19 respectively), I've started to ship them even harder. It's terminal. Holy fucking hell it's terminal.

Let's start from the beginning. Akatsuki, being a terrorist organization, has little room for camaraderie, and yet pairs partners together in small, elite groupings. Usually, the pairings have a symbiotic relationship, and reasonably similar/compatible jutsu. Tobi and Deidara are no different. Originally, Deidara had a great partner in Sasori, a seasoned shinobi with a long history, and a well practiced jutsu. When Sasori was killed in battle, Deidara was left without a partner for only a short time before the Akatsuki invited Tobi, a mysterious shinobi into their organization. Tobi has his entire body covered, and next to nothing is known about him. The rings they carry mean "Sapphire" when put together. Sapphire is the jewel of power and strength, as well as wisdom, and judgement.

Deidara is the kind of person who will tell you exactly how he feels about you, hatred or respect. That being said, he respects only a few people, and his art is the most important thing in the world to him. Though, at the same time, as seen with other characters like Itachi, he clearly has an inferiority complex. He readily takes control of Tobi, and even cares for him as his kouhai. Tobi though, at this point, has a lax personality, and often seems to be poking fun at Deidara. It's clear even from the beginning that Tobi's power level is three times that of Deidara's. Though, due to the nature of Deidara's character, he strictly adheres to their dynamic, and bosses Tobi around. Tobi doesn't seem to mind much, even preferring to avoid fighting if he can help it.

Tobi and Deidara spend time traveling and training together, so much so that we even see they have a combo attack. Tobi is able to displace time and space with his jutsu, and uses this to embed Deidara's bombing ability into the ground, creating a minefield. As an aside, Tobi can also teleport just in time to avoid Deidara's explosions. Someone as experienced and capable as Tobi paired with the rash and excitable Deidara leads to some fun moments too! Tobi has a goofy personality, and Deidara has a short fuse, leading to some tsukkomi and boke moments. It's clear that Deidara has a soft spot for Tobi, since he protects and often saves Tobi, even when he doesn't have to, and Tobi can handle himself. So much so that when Deidara releases his final move to kill Sasuke, his last words are "I'm sorry, Tobi." Implying that he's hesitant to leave his precious kouhai by himself.

Knowing that Deidara never knew the true identity of Tobi makes me crazy. He always saw Tobi as someone he'd never seen the face of, someone incompetent but somehow super lucky. Tobi knew all there was to know about Deidara, and Deidara knew next to none about Tobi. And yet, there was so much stuggle to Deidara, so much in an attempt to improve himself and overcome the ability that humiliated him. The ability being the Sharingan, which Tobi secretly possesses and uses to displace himself. Deidara was never the wiser, and Tobi likely never knew the depth, or reason for his hatred of the Sharingan. That being said, I do think that Obito and Deidara likely both held a distate for the Uchiha clan for different reasons.

I love to imagine that Obito had genuine feelings for Deidara, and found him endearing, even perhaps seeing himself in someone who wanted to be in control so badly that he destroyed himself over it. If it weren't for his plans, I would more than bet that Obito would have wanted to keep Deidara around for a lot longer, and possibly even switch the script so he could take an opportunity to teach Deidara how to better use his techniques. Though... Deidara likely wouldn't have accepted being taught by his kouhai. In my personal hc, I think Deidara felt responsible for Tobi's growth, but I don't think that he would have aligned with Obito's Eye of the Moon plan. An infinite illusion of peace would've only pissed him off.

As Reanimated Deidara, even though they don't speak much, I imagine Obito must've felt something from seeing his old senpai!!

DYNAMIC IN BED
I almost exclusively imagine Tobi on top. Deidara just has real bottom bitch energy. Pillow princess ahoy. Sorry, Deidara, but the inferiority complex + the service mouths on your hands and chest + the fishnet under the Akatsuki cloak are more than enough for me to want you destroyed. I have a feeling that Deidara is whiny in bed, bratty and demanding. He wants what he wants, and he complains if he doesn't get it. Tobi likes to tease him because it's exciting, and getting Deidara angry when he doesn't have access to his clay means he can't do much to overpower Tobi. I think Tobi has moments where his inner darkness comes out, and he takes full control of Deidara roughly. Deidara probably finds a guy who overpowers him annoying at first, but it's hard for him to worry about it when Tobi gives it in equal affection. Deidara is a love sponge, and any kind of praise wraps him around your finger. If given the proper affection, Deidara is obedient, and Tobi can make full use of Deidara's jutsu. ;)

This is all personal headcanon, but as Obito, I can imagine the dynamic changing slightly. Deidara would still call himself the senpai, just because that's what they're used to, and the much more competent Obito would think it's cute. Obito takes a more active role in riling Deidara up only to make him cry in the bedroom. It's especially sexy if you imagine the reanimated Deidara and a new rinnegan Obito. Even if Obito is calling the shots now, I think it would be cute if Deidara was still bratty toward him.
